Although politics in the United States are largely determined by the roles of solely Republicans and Democrats, third parties exist throughout the country, and are trying to take foot in the decisions made for the future. In the Pioneer Valley of Western Massachusetts, Libertarians, Green Rainbow Party, and Independents are popular amongst third party supporters, and help define what they believe to be the best course for their country.
Supporters of Libertarian movements can differ greatly in their beliefs, with the core of their values being in limited control of the state. Many believe in the legalization of marijuana and/or all drugs, and that a person’s life should be left up to their own choosing. The party has been known to be described colloquially as “economically conservative, socially liberal.”
The Green Rainbow Party is towards on the opposite side of the spectrum, with a more overall liberal viewpoints. Along with many other beliefs, they stand for social and economic equality, and many fear greatly for the climate change the world is undergoing.
And finally, represented in this are a handful of Independents. These citizens are not siding with one political stance or the other, and tend to look solely at the values of a politician. While not exactly a political party of their own in the sense that they have no singular shared belief system, Independents play an important role in the change from the two-party political system the United States faces today.
Although their beliefs can differ greatly, from anti-state to universal health care, from anti-gun to pro-gun, they all agree on one thing; that this country needs to be more run by a system with more than two choices, and that values matter more than a mainstream political stance.
