When Marcus Harcus – Minnesotans Against Prohibition (MAP) and Campaign for Full Legalization MN – asked why organizations like Smart Approaches to Marijuana MN (SAMMn) work so hard to maintain prohibition of a non-lethal, healing plant, he deserved an answer. Based on the prohibition lobbyists invited by SAMMn to speak at the January 16, 2019 press conference, we can begin to suss out an answer. No surprise it is money and profits.
While to interest of police, sheriffs, and prosecutors in maintaining cannabis prohibition as the foundation of their for-profit policing schemes are obvious, the profit motives of people like Kim Bemis – CEO of an on-line teen drug counselling service – and Ken Winters – board member of that same organization are a bit less so. Much like the county counselling services that California prohibitionist Dana Stevens highlighted, by targeting youth and teens these folks can present themselves as the friend of the concerned parents in whom their messge evokes fear and loathing of legal cannabis. All the while ignoring the evidence presented by Gunnar Aas – Minnesotans Against Prohibition (MAP) and Sensible Minnesota – that legal dispensaries are not allowed to not sell to teens, while the illicit markets that prohibition creates have no such restrictions.
