In early 2018, Chronicle narrative writer Jason Fagone reached out to Dan Rush and the people who investigated him, wanting to understand how the prominent Oakland union organizer and legal cannabis booster ended up in prison. He would report the story over the course of two years. The epic narrative project “Operation Limelight” is the result of this effort.
Reporter and author Jason Fagone and award-winning journalist and bestselling author David Downs sat down with Chronicle subscribers to discuss “Operation Limelight,” a story that took readers on a wild ride into the rise of the legal marijuana movement. Full legalization – and a new multi-billion-dollar industry — seemed on the verge of becoming reality. Oakland union official Dan “Superman” Rush would play an outsize role in helping birth legal cannabis, but while doing so would take actions that made him the target of a federal investigation.
Jason Fagone is a narrative writer with The Chronicle, focusing on in-depth stories and investigations. He joined the staff in the fall of 2017 after publishing his third nonfiction book, “The Woman Who Smashed Codes,” about the little-known woman who helped create America’s cryptography apparatus during the course of two world wars.
Journalist David Downs is known for his coverage of cannabis policy and legalization. As the cannabis editor at The Chronicle, he helped launch GreenState.com. Downs is the co-author with Ed Rosenthal of the crop science book “Marijuana Harvest.”
