Why Is CBD Great for Skincare?
Cannabidiol or CBD is now one of the most popular health ingredients found in virtually everything: candies, pet products, clothing, candles, and food, aside from the usual tinctures. The popularity of CBD is so widespread that it has already successfully invaded the beauty and cosmetics industry.
Today, you’ll find CBD in creams, serums, lip balms, cleansers, and sunscreens sold in chemists and beauty supply stores everywhere — whether online or in brick-and-mortar establishments.
So what makes CBD great for the skin?
CBD and skin health
The cannabis plant naturally contains both CBD and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).
However, unlike THC, which is known to have psychoactive effects, CBD is known for its beneficial health effects, such as:
• Alleviating anxiety and improving sleep
• Relaxing the muscles
• Reducing pain and inflammation
• Preventing cognitive decline
When it comes to the skin health benefits of CBD, aestheticians usually cite the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits it provides. These are helpful in improving or treating specific skin problems like free radical damage leading to premature wrinkling, dryness, inflammation, and scarring.
CBD is also being studied for its possible acne-fighting qualities as it aids in the reduction of sebum production in the skin. Other studies also show how CBD can be an effective ingredient for the treatment of psoriasis and eczema.
However, since CBD use in skincare is still in its early days, more research is recommended to cement its place in efficacious natural skincare ingredients. One great thing about CBD is that it’s safe to use topically.
What makes a great CBD skincare product?
According to Marc S. Hines, one of the founders of BIOS Organics, a good rule of thumb in using CBD skin creams is 100 to 125 milligrams of CBD per ounce. This is the optimum amount that the skin can absorb, and anything above it would be a waste as the skin cannot absorb more than the recommended amount between applications.
For facial washes or wash-offs, 50 milligrams per ounce is the recommended amount since it will be washed off anyway, and it is not expected to have the same effect as leave-on products.
Also, it’s important to look for full-spectrum CBD oil as it genuinely helps in skin rejuvenation and health. It contains all the beneficial cannabinoids naturally occurring in the cannabis plant, and very little THC. Hines also says that while CBD isolate (used in some CBD skincare products) is great for pain relief, it doesn’t do much in terms of skincare.
