On August 17, 2010, Amanuel Gebreselassie was pulled over ostensibly for speeding by Officer Brett Schoenberg (the same officer who had Miguel Oregon at gunpoint and told Hugo Perez, “don’t suck my dick,” five months earlier in Miguel/Hugo video). After being told to “roll the fucking window down,” Amanuel was concerned for his safety and actually called 911. During the call he is then yanked out of the car and beaten by five officers who surrounded the car. Ostensibly he committed the crime of “obstructing an officer” but this is disputed by (1) Schoenberg’s statement to another officer that “we’re pulling the driver out. He’s being a dick” and (2) that the officer who told him to “get out of the car” was standing in the way of Amanuel doing that before grabbing him out.
Amanuel was booked in jail for two days, lost his job at a fast-food restaurant for missing shifts, was released and never charged with a crime. He then filed a complaint for excessive force, which was determined to be “within department policy.” Marijuana found in the car was both (1) legal for him to possess as a designated, documented caretaker of an ailing patient and (2) even if illegal, was deemed to be an illegal search. Officers noted Amanuel asked for a blood draw to prove he had not been using marijuana at any point; he was declined.
