The Azamara Quest docked at 7AM but we weren’t rushed as we were not connecting with a flight and were just going to walk off and take a taxi to our hotel. We took the canal cruise in the morning; wow – our half empty boat two hours later when we passed by was completely filled, glad we did the early one. We then went and walked the shopping district for a couple of hours till lunch. I have to say that the outdoor cafe seemed nice and friendly when we sat down but after ordering a simple lunch, we had to wait 45 minutes for it to arrive and it was horrible. It was the only restaurant that I have ordered a soda and the ice was melted before the meal was served (a bad Trip Advisor review coming). In the afternoon we went to Christiania, a breakaway community in Copenhagen, established in 1971, who have divorced themselves from the city and the EU. Quite a bunch of 1970’s hippie types on 24 hectares who basically got the land for a dollar because it was an abandoned military base, took a mortgage out to rebuild buildings and clean the place up and today is home to 600+ residents. Alternative lifestyle is the key along with alternative medicine and a street where you can visit a dozen or so shops and buy hash or marijuana even though it is illegal in Denmark. Quite cloak and dagger along with camouflage and masks in case anyone isn’t paying attention to the warning signs saying “no photos”. Quite a site to see; afterwards we went to Tivoli and saw a greatly expanded and crowed amusement site than we had remembered from 1990 when we visited with Peter & Carol. Evelyn got several rides on the carousel after which we went back to the hotel – we asked at the front desk and they steered us to a local restaurant that had excellent food, service and a piano player. Had enough for one day at this point…
Got up early to see the Little Mermaid before the crowds descended upon her; at 8AM along the canal where our hotel is we saw the last of the party goers from the night before – you have to be partying pretty hard to be sitting on the canal drinking beer at 8AM on a Sunday morning. We had the Little Mermaid to ourselves for a few minutes and then went back to the hotel for breakfast. Cleaned up and got ready for our early afternoon flight.
