Nothing seemed to work.
At times, well over a hundred people came to denounce Hawaii’s Cannabis Eradication -Green Harvest program at the County Council. Facts were useless. Our Rights and laws meant to protect us from an invasive and out of control police and government program were constantly ignored.
The words, with the tune from “Ghost Riders in the Sky”, came together in one night. My pal Patricia woke up the next morning humming the mrlofy. She had found it impossible to get the tune out of her head. I am pretty sure, though repeating it over and over in my head trying to make the words fit the night before, I did not sing out any part of the song until the next day. But there she was, a restless sleeper, even with me on the floor at the foot of her bed, she woke up with the song rattling in her head.
That was the effect I was hoping to have on the Hawaii County Council. Friends and allies in the audience singing the chorus, told later of how all the council members were laughing it up during the song. Listen carefully, you can even hear now-imprisoned Roger Christie laughing from the gallery at when the part, “…they were covering their ass,” comes up.
No Dope Raiders in Our Skies, flat and off key, still must have opened some of their hearts because the next year, in the Spring of 2001, we won, what was up until then one of our greatest victories.
NO DOPE RAIDERS IN OUR SKIES!!
By Dwight Kondo, Light On Hawaii
They were pounding hard in Puna,
saw them just the other day,
raiding low in choppers,
they were causing quite a fray.
They didn’t care about our rights
the rule of law was gone,
The dope raiders in our sky.
We took our case to the county council,
they said we were wrong.
W’straight faces they told us,
to them all the Pot belongs.
It’s twice the price of gold we said,
it’s medicine and tax!
But all the facts were useless,
they were covering their ass.
D-E-A, DEA NO!
NO DOPE RAIDERS IN OUR SKY
From the highest seat of government
to the janitors below,
Marijuana is a sweet friend
whose light we all let glow.
To tell us plants are evil
and prohibit us to grow,
negates the Constitution
and our Human Right to sow.
HIPPIE AYE-EE,
HIPPIE KEEP YOUR HEAD LOW,
FOR DOPE RAIDERS IN THE SKY!
Now if this fight were equal
we could end it all this day.
But Marijuana’s peaceful
making war is not our way.
But the courts are wrong,
The cops are bought,
And the politicians all lie…
But to lose our rights and choices
is to let our Freedom die.
D-E-A! DEA NO!
NO DOPE RAIDERS IN OUR SKY.
They were pounding hard in Hilo, saw them just the other day.
They were pounding hard in Ka‘u, saw them just the other day.
They were pounding hard in Kona, saw them just the other day.
They were pounding hard in Hawi, saw them just the other day.
They were pounding Honokaa, saw them just the other day.
Raiding low in choppers, they were causing quite a fray!
