On Monday the effort to legalize recreational marijuana use in Maine took a leap forward, as activists gathered a sufficient number of signatures to put the proposal on the state’s ballot come the November elections. A group calling itself “The Campaign to Regulate Marijuana Like Alcohol,” said their proposal, which would allow adults 21 years of age and older to legally possess marijuana, had earned the support of over 103,000 Maine voters. This number constitutes more than 10 percent of Maine’s total voters, and is well over the necessary 61,123 signatures needed to ran a place on the ballot. Similar drives are currently under way in half a dozen other states, including Massachusetts and California.
