Lola, Paul and Kal are three young Brits on the hippy trail in India, in search of cosmic enlightenment – or failing that, cheap drugs, cheaper drink and a hedonistic good time. They finance their quest by dealing charas – sticks of cannabis resin – in India, and Ecstasy back in the U.K.
Manali Cream is the tale of a drug deal gone wrong with a twist in the tail. It is also a study of personalities under pressure – Paul, the knowing white guy convinced he ‘understands’ the natives; Lola, the ‘spiritual’ girl who turns nasty when she realises India may not be somewhere she can just run away from; and Kal, a cynical British-born Asian who is violently reconnected with the culture of his forebears.
A fourth character in the film is India itself – from the epic stillness of the Himalayas to the saturated colours and frenetic bustle of Bombay; from dreadlocked sadhus to burnished skyscrapers – and the onrushing monsoon.
